This past Wednesday in the one and only ATX Kanye, Rhianna, N.E.R.D, Lupe Fiasco, a few of my closest friends and i all hung out. Yes, we had to pay to get in…and for our drinks…and we weren’t allowed to take pictures or get within 20ft of them , but we did connect! So much so that i can honestly say that was one of the best concerts i’ve ever been to thus far.
Not only was it fun to wear brightly colored clothes and huge chunky jewelry, it was quite amusing to walk in and see all the teenagers out on a school night wearing everything they bought at American Apparel all at once, not even comprehending what it means to dress like that, because they weren’t even alive during the 80s. I spent half of Lupe Fiasco milling around getting my adult beverage and finding our seats, but the real show (for me…) started when Pharrel took the stage with N.E.R.D.
Okay i’m just gonna say it, i love him, he’s beautiful and i just want him to know he’s my favorite boy. The show was great and full of energy and the lights were awesome. I’m a big fan of lights and projections for those of you who do not know me all too well, and they used them both beautifully while rockin’ the house and getting the crowd involved. I loved that he told us to get off our asses and jump. LOVED it.
Rhianna was next and i really couldn’t contain my excitement at this point. She is so damn cute and I’ve decided i would drop everything to be one of her backup dancers. Their costumes were the first to actually utilize the glow in the dark theme and where N.E.R.Ds dueling drummers had been, dancers and back up singers now waved their light sticks, i refuse to say they were light sabers okay, to Rhianna’s powerful vocals. She brought the surprise of the night sing Paper Planes, an M.I .A favorite of mine skyrocketing Little Miss Sunshine to an all new level for me, and good thing since she failed to sing Shut Up and Drive.
Convinced she would return for that one at any moment the lights came on and the stage transformed for Kanye. WOW not what i expected, or was it. I knew that in Kanye fashion that the show would be all about him er.. his music and that no one else would be performing with him, but man i never thought it would be as well scripted as it was. It was no R Kelly rap opera but it was most definitely cheese-O-rific. I don’t want to go into too much detail but the talking spaceship and the alien which visited him during the show was kinda great, not to mention we had to lift his spirits by singing Don’t Stop Believin’ for him. Whereas Mr. West did not wear his light up jacket and daft punk did not join him, he made up for it with the glowing orbs and projections not only on the screen which up the back wall of the stage and drop down screen but onto the center hydraulic floor portion of the stage which was what served as the spaceship. Did i mention the pyrotechnics and the mini fire works (also another one of my favorite things) Yes this concert kicked ass! Now anytime i hear a song played that night it’s hard to refrain from saying “when they played this at the concert…” i’m working on it, sorry.
While on the way to the car and discussing that money well spent and my disappointment of the absence of Shut Up and Drive, who do we see…Jason Street, more widely known by his real name Scott Porter. Austin was giving me a hard time about Gossip Girl so I lashed back at him with a blow to Friday Night Lights, i hope Porter didn’t hear me. Scott, if you did, please know that i was not serious. I happen to like the show, 1. because like Gossip Girl it’s on one of the stations i work for 2. because it’s shot here in this great city and that means so many things to the film community here and 3. i like to watch and a, see all the things i recognize and b, follow the story line because it’s addicting okay it just is. i was just on the defense because someone was hatin’ on GG and well FNL was their weakness and something told me to “finish him!”
Now that i feel my conscious and name have been cleared, i will conclude with saying if you missed this show you missed greatness. Also, don’t believe a venue the next time they say no pictures…just find a better way to hide the camera because i wish i had some better shots to share. Unfortunately i only captured low grade snapshots with my camera phone and i will upload those to a picture page soon. If you weren’t born in the 80s, you might want to consider further research before bringing all the fashion dos and don’ts back in one single outfit and before you defend your favorite show by putting down someone else’s favorite show, make sure a main character from that show isn’t 3ft away before you say it. I guess my Karma is my wisdom teeth are coming in and i’m on so much ibuprofen i’ve been back to the pharmacy twice for refills. ouch.
